WOMEN’S STUDIES 

To give students a broad, interdisciplinary understanding of the ways in which gender interacts with race, class, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation to shape human consciousness and determine the social, political, and cultural organization of society throughout history.

 

PROGRAMMING:

Women’s Studies collaborates with other programs in the College and across the University to provide relevant lectures and workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Recent events have included talks on motherhood and honor in East Africa, the changing role of women in politics, international trafficking in servants, and the impact of Supreme Court abortion decisions. The program sponsors celebrations related to Women’s History Month and presents the Women’s Studies Film Series in the Winter and Spring terms. Women’s Studies also awards the Martha Montgomery Prize, given to a student for the best work in a Women’s Studies course that year.

Women’s Studies has worked with and supported the efforts of student groups such as Violence Education and Information for Women (VIEW) and the Foundation of Undergraduates for Sexual Equality (FUSE)to present events for students including VIEW’s Student Summit on Sexual Violence, a discussion of women’s legal rights with the Women’s Law Project, and a sexuality workshop. We invite any interested student groups to contact us to co-sponsor events, speakers, or other programs.

Drexel Women’s Studies Program is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Women’s Studies Consortium, which includes twelve other women’s and gender studies programs at local universities and colleges. Consortium events on and off the Drexel campus are open to Drexel students, faculty, and staff. Women’s Studies is also proud to partner with local non-profit groups serving the needs of women, and will be happy to assist students with internship and/or co-op placements.
